      Senior Software Development Engineer Interview

      Jul 13, 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Portland, OR
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Thetus (Portland, OR) in Mar 2012

      Interview

The first stage of the process was 30 minute phone interview with VP of Engineering, primarily for technical screening. HR followed up and scheduled a series of in person interviews at their office. The in-person meetings were comprised of interviews with HR, 3 members of the engineering team (including the VP), and the CEO. The engineering team were friendly and knowledgable, but came across as a bit fatigued of the operational challenges that existed in the company. I thought they asked excellent technical questions that exhibited that they were serious about making high-quality, maintainable software. The CEO was entirely unpleasant to speak with; the level of abrasiveness and arrogance that she displayed made for an eye-opening experience. They would not discuss salary requirements during the interview (per CEO, "I know what people are worth"), and they implement a "one offer" system. This means that they offer a salary that is non-negotiable. A week or so after the interview, I received a very low offer via email. Benefits included a good medical plan, 18 days of PTO, a non-contributing 401k, and a TriMet pass. I declined the offer due to the low salary and unpleasant leadership.
