      Data Entry Clerk Interview

      Oct 15, 2014
      Anonymous employee
      Chicago, IL
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at The HistoryMakers (Chicago, IL) in Jul 2014

      Interview

The executive director travels a lot so it was difficult to pinpoint a time to interview. In the end they called for a phone interview. It functioned as a normal job interview for a bit but I felt as if they talked more than they listened, (which I feel is a strange process if the goal is to get to know the person and determine if you would like to hire them). Then things became uncomfortable. They went on for a bit about how I wasn't the candidate that they were looking for. I was able to dispute their claims with evidence on my resume each time. I thought it was unprofessional/unusual for them to so pointedly say that they did not want to hire me midway through the interview. They then asked a series of invasive questions regarding my marital status. Despite telling me the entire time that she did not believe I was right for the job I was asked to come in for an on site interview. I arrived to the office about 15 minutes early and was told to wait. At about 5 minutes before my interview they called one of their current employees into their office for a meeting. I did not actually get called into her office for the interview began until about 45 minutes after my scheduled interview time. The on site interview felt repetitive and it was more of the same: them outwardly questioning my abilities, digging for personal information, and telling me that they really didn't want me for the job. Flustered, they passed me off to an employee who gave me a more detailed explanation of the position. For the first time in the process I felt as if I was being respect. Otherwise I felt as if I wasted my time and I was sure that they weren't going to hire me. I would say that accepting the job offer in the end was not a wise decision on my part but I was desperate.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

From what I have heard they typically tell a candidate that they are unqualified. I would recommend being ready to defend your qualification and being able to explain how your skills are transferable. This kind of back and forth goes for several rounds.

      Question 2

They require a typing test with all applications.

We are looking to revise our processes, but want candidates that are a good fit. However, if we screen a candidate and think they are a good fit, why would we tell them they are not qualified? We might ask questions about specific qualifications. In our offer letter, we provide the salary, start date and benefits offered. Also, you intimate that we are not honest and this is of great insult, because equality of treatment between employees is most important to us. Otherwise, our policies would be discriminatory which goes against the very grain of The HistoryMakers. We have a wonderfully diverse and committed staff and it hurts to see others who do not work here try to hurt our organization this way.
