      Senior Product Designer Interview

      Sep 18, 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at SurveyMonkey

      Interview

      1) Short phone call with the recruiter. 2) Call with a design team member. 3) Design Challenge The design team provided no feedback on the challenge I submitted. The design team didn't even have a discussion with me about my work or allow me to present my work. What a joke! I interviewed with a person of lesser experience and talent, yet was asked to submit a design challenge. Sure kiddo, I'll do your design challenge! LOL! Why is SM putting Sr. Product Designers through design challenges? Isn't a resume and portfolio enough? How can SM judge a designer by a design challenge when it's not *even* close to what a day in the life of a designer looks like? Real Designers: research, collaborate, work with subject matter experts, interview users, AND THEN iterate to come up with good solutions. Stop judging designers by giving them a silly challenge and then deciding if you think they are good or not. That is not even close to how you can tell if a designer is experienced or not. -- > Poor designer interview decisions. Poor process. The communication was extremely slow. I was not given any chance to ask questions, understand benefits, etc. Extremely one-sided interview process with a cold "no thanks" call from the recruiter after waiting forever to hear back. Wasted an entire three weeks of my time. Glad I didn't get the job. Won't be applying here again.

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at SurveyMonkey (Ottawa, ON) in Sep 2019

      Interview

I applied to SurveyMonkey through an employee referral. Overall, the process consisted of: 1 phone screening with the recruiter; 1 phone interview with the hiring manager; 2 phone interviews with team members; 1 full-day, onsite consisting of 1 presentation and 5 interviews; For most interviews, the questions asked about my previous experiences and how dealt with with situations in the past. A lot of it was also focused on my working style, how I collaborate with others, things that make me curious. For the onsite presentation, I was asked to present two past projects to a panel formed by designers, product managers and engineers. After the presentation, I had 1:1 interviews with some of the same people sitting in the presentation. Although it may seem like a long process, every single person I talked to was extremely nice. The recruiter did I great job of following up at each step and setting the right expectation. So, I knew what was coming. The onsite may seem intimidating but people understand is an intense day and make sure you feel relaxed and have as many pauses as you need.
