      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      May 28, 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Stytch (San Francisco, CA) in Feb 2024

      Interview

Bunch of rounds, can't remember how many but final round was at least 4. Everything was fairly reasonable except the system design round's format you'd just speak and the interviewer would write down what you're saying. A few days after the interview I decided to read the notes and noticed that the interviewer had misrepresented what I said and put in some naive incorrect piece of commentary. In retrospect should've been double-checking the interviewer's work. Wasn't particularly impressed with the interviewers anyways, so didn't do anything and got the expected rejection. The recruiter was kind of shady in that he sent a LinkedIn connection request the night before me getting the rejection notice. Building his connection list before delivering the "bad news", and then pretending to deliver the rejection asap.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Stytch in Nov 2024

      Interview

Lengthy Interview Process with Unclear Outcome Pros: The team was friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. The process included interesting and engaging technical challenges. Communication was consistent, and I appreciated the recruiter’s responsiveness. Cons: The interview process was extremely lengthy, spanning over three weeks and multiple rounds. Some aspects of the process felt misaligned with the role, particularly the system design challenge, which seemed overly focused on solving a real-world problem rather than assessing my technical skills. After significant time and effort invested, the rejection lacked clear feedback, leaving me uncertain about how my performance was evaluated. Review: I recently interviewed for a technical role at Stytch and went through a detailed process that included a recruiter screening, a manager chat, a technical presentation, a live coding challenge, a system design challenge, a cultural fit interview, and a value alignment conversation with the CTO. While I appreciated the opportunity to engage with such a thoughtful and capable team, the overall process felt unnecessarily taxing. The system design challenge, in particular, stood out because it closely resembled a real-world business problem. I proposed a database architecture solution during this challenge, which made me question whether the exercise was truly hypothetical or intended to address an actual issue. Additionally, after investing significant time and effort, the rejection came without detailed feedback, which left me unsure about how my contributions were assessed or why I wasn’t selected. Upon reviewing Glassdoor, I noticed a pattern of similar experiences reported by other candidates, including lengthy processes with no hires made. While this doesn’t necessarily imply bad intent, it does raise concerns about the fairness and focus of the interview process. Advice to Management: Streamline the interview process to make it more efficient and respectful of candidates’ time. Provide clearer feedback, especially for candidates who complete multiple rounds and technical challenges. Reassess the alignment between technical challenges and the roles being hired for to ensure candidates feel they are being evaluated on their skills rather than solving potential business problems.

      Interview

Hiring process seemed pretty standard. Met with the recruiter first and then moved onto a conversation with the hiring manager. After that, they schedule several technical interviews. I did the first, which was primarily a React exercise, made a few dumb mistakes that ate up my time, but it wasn’t difficult. Got rejected after this round and reached out for feedback. I was ghosted by the recruiter and never heard back. I think it’s frustrating to get nothing when you sacrifice your time for several rounds of interviews. Do better.

      Interview

I recently engaged with Stytch during the interview process for a position I was genuinely excited about. The initial communication and discussions with the team were promising, and it was clear that Stytch values passionate and skilled individuals. However, my experience brought to light some significant concerns regarding their current interview process and its accessibility for neurodiverse candidates. While I appreciated the team’s effort to engage and the prompt feedback provided, I was ultimately unable to proceed in the interview process due to the lack of accommodations for neurodiversity. Despite expressing the need for adjustments that would allow me to showcase my abilities in a fair and equitable manner, the company was unable to offer an alternative to their standard interview format, which relies heavily on on-the-spot technical assessments. This experience highlighted a gap in Stytch’s recruitment practices, particularly in accommodating the diverse needs of candidates. While startups often face challenges in establishing comprehensive processes, inclusivity and flexibility in recruitment are essential for attracting and evaluating a diverse range of talents. I am sharing this feedback in the hope that it will encourage Stytch and similar companies to reevaluate and expand their interview processes to be more inclusive of neurodiverse candidates. Doing so not only aligns with principles of equity and diversity but also enriches the company culture and innovation by embracing different ways of thinking. In conclusion, while my personal experience was disappointing due to these specific limitations, I believe there is a significant opportunity for Stytch to lead by example in the tech industry by adopting more flexible and inclusive recruitment strategies.
