      Software Engineer, Developer Tools Interview

      Application

The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Starling (Dublin, Dublin) in Feb 2024

      Interview

I submitted my application online and got reached out to by a recruiter. The initial meeting was with said recruiter and started off rather strange - it felt more like a quiz than anything else, for example the very first thing I was asked was what I know about Starling. When I mentioned I mostly knew they were a digital bank I was told that was "good enough" and the recruiter moved on to more questions. No introduction or anything. It felt like I left the initial meeting knowing not much more than before it. Afterwards I scheduled an interview with two engineers at the company. They somewhat introduced themselves and they held a standard interview - for me to only find out in the final 10 minutes of the interview that they were engineers from the team I was destined for. I wasn't told this at any point in time and I was apparently supposed to deduce it from their descriptions of their day to day work (which I wasn't told much of by the recruiter in the prior meeting). After this meeting I was sent a "technical challenge" to submit to proceed to the later stage of discussing my solution with the team. The assignment was to create an app that integrates with their API and implements a feature - the document mentioned candidates usually submit it within 7 days(Which is a LOT of time for an unpaid home assignment). The feature description was relatively vague and had you familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of how their API works. I chose to spend a reasonable amount of time on the task and submitted it. After a few days I received an email notifying me they werent proceeding with my application along with a long list of very specific task related feedback on my submission - Among them were the fact that a part of my submission does too much, using a specific data type in a certain situation, going into several bugs and more things about my implementation which I assumed were going to be discussed in the next phase. Adding to the previous experiences in the process this felt like an extremely bizarre decision which left me more confused than not. Unless you want to spend a very long time without understanding much about whats going on and while investing far too much of your time I wouldn't apply to Starling

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry to hear that you felt you did not have a positive experience with us this time round. We do value our applicants time and efforts and so I am disappointed that this did not come across during your interview process. Please contact us by emailing careers@starlingbank.com if you would like to discuss further.
