Most important to demonstrate knowledge, demonstrate positive personal and professional qualities, and a desire to keep learning. Layered though different managers and most interested in a culture fit.

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Sonen Capital in Sep 2013
Interview
Phone interview, first step. Friendly phone conversation. Cool business model. Sounds like a small group looking to grow the business. Being careful about who they bring in. Ended up not getting asked to come in for second round most likely because the position wasn't a perfect fit and because of my lack of experience. Received an email saying I had not made it to the next round.
