      Software Engineer Interview

      Jul 26, 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Slalom (Seattle, WA) in Jul 2017

      Interview

At first contact with Slalom the recruiter was great he was friendly and easy to talk to. After meeting with the recruiter I was scheduled for a technical phone screen. The phone screening was also an enjoyable experience, the senior engineer that was conducting the screen was very friendly, clear, and easy to understand. Afterwards I was asked to wait a few weeks for an on-site interview while they get things setup on their end. I was contacted by another recruiter, she was very helpful and quick to respond when it came to communication/details. When the on-site interview was scheduled it was outline very specifically. I spent the week preparing based on the given template and compiled notes from everyone I talked to. When I arrived on-site the two interviewers were nice. I was told they would be easy to talk to and understand. The interview didn't go as expected, aside from the first question that I was asked. The second person involved in the interview was very friendly, but her English was very hard to understand and the question was not clear. It was very obvious to me that the two were not given the same information I was. The first interviewer kept looking at his watch, and seemed to just want to rush through and get it over with, and give it off the feel that he wasn't paying attention at times. I imagine the on-site process was properly designed, but it was very poorly executed. I understand a lot of it had to do with not being a good match for them on the technical level based on the interview but the interview itself wasn't a good assessment of somebodies technical understanding. The feedback received made it very obvious to me that the interviewer didn't care to put much thought or effort into the interview. I was told to work on skills, and techniques that weren't mentioned or facilitated during the interview. Things could have went a lot smoother if the communication among the leadership was a bit more defined internally. I debated giving it a positive review because it was a good experience overall, and provides a lesson in always being prepared and ready for anything.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your experience in the interview process. While it is good to see you note that you felt the experience was positive overall, it is also clear there were areas where we could have done better and where we can work to improve. Your feedback will help us in our efforts to improve - it is important that our interviewers are aligned and attentive, and that we are consistent in how we set both our candidates and the interviewer up for the meeting. Your time is valuable and we want the meeting, regardless of the outcome, to be a reflection of our understanding of that. Thank you again and we wish you the best in your career search.

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Slalom in May 2022

      Interview

The recruiters were great. However, in my opinion, the tech screeners lost all interest once they saw that I am over 40. Additionally, the tech screening case was sent to me 20 minutes before the interview. To be fair, they might have been trying to gauge how well I can think on my toes, but I found that to be unusual.

First-round with HR, very helpful and friendly. Two rounds of technical interviews, one is more focused on coding and CS knowledge in general, the other is more conversational with BQ and working experience.

      Interview

I had a great interview process! Recruiter was very responsive and the people I interviewed with were awesome. I was told I got positive feedback from the interviewers but they aren’t hiring for the position until the find a director for the team. I feel like it was a way to tell me they aren’t interested.
