      Data Engineer Interview

      Oct 3, 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Signafire (New York, NY) in Sep 2018

      Interview

Phone screen, coding exercise, on-site interview. Phone screen with an engineering manager to assess general fit for the position. Coding exercise was skipped in my case due to a long(ish) previous work history. On-site interview was conducted in three rounds: low-level (light functional coding and database design), high-level (system/architecture design), culture fit (discussion with senior leadership).

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

Given some JSON-like data structure, conditionally filter and sum a collection of values.

      Question 2

Design an architecture which will allow users to generate data exports based on a date range, with progress notifications.

      Data Engineer Interview

      Nov 30, 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Signafire in Nov 2018

      Interview

I was contacted for a phone screen by a product owner. The interview went well and they were a nice person. I was selected to advance to the next round which was a takehome assignment. I did well on this and was told I would be flown out to New York within two weeks for the final round interview. After delays due to Thanksgiving scheduling issues (understandable), I was told I'd have another phone interview with the data engineering team. Shortly after this interview, I was sent an email telling me the company was no longer interested in my candidacy despite a good performance. I reached out to my interviewer for feedback and didn't receive a word. I have no idea what went wrong - I'm assuming they just found someone who lived closer (I made it clear I would be relocating to NYC regardless) whom they didn't need to fly in the for the final round. I wouldn't apply to this company again. They don't seem to respect one's time put forth during the interview process and, in my experience, that usually correlates with the company's treatment of full-time employees.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Write an application that can discern the number of connected IP addresses at a given time. Dataset was unrealistically small.
