Senior Member of Technical Staff Interview

      Jan 6, 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Bengaluru
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at ServiceNow (Bengaluru) in Jul 2018

      Interview

A placement consultant reached out to me briefing about the opportunity. They invited for a briefing session on Saturday to make us aware about ServiceNow and interviews happened on Sunday. I underwent 4 rounds in person. 1st was a Director round. The hiring Director was very hands on yet friendly. I enjoyed the interaction which was a mix of personality + technical discussion. 2nd was a design round relevant to the position followed by a Senior Manager round. Last in person round was a coding round to check problem solving etc. This was followed by a technical round with US team which was a friendly discussion of what I had done etc. By now everything was smooth, I cleared all the rounds. I liked all the interactions and I guess ServiceNow team also liked me. It looked like I was almost through. Last was a senior director round from US. First question was what do I do as an Architect. I started explaining all that I do towards execution, strategic innovative work double clicking on every aspect. I was told you are giving generic answer, I want specifics. Seriously, you ask me a catch all generic question and expect a specific answer. So then he says let me ask it this way. He started describing a scenario where I get English statements as requirements from marketing then how would I translate it into technical requirements? And then how would I do this? And then how would I do that? And then how would I do this + that? ..... He asked me a long question which was actually a series of questions. Again expecting "SPECIFICS". And again I tried to answer every question he asked and AGAIN I was told I am giving generic answer. Practically the interview was over by now. Then we killed time for another 20 minutes or so and next day I was told I wasn't through. I was just wondering what exactly was this guy trying to find out by asking such generic questions. Asking questions is an art. If you want specifics, ask specific question. The hiring Director had done a better job asking these questions and we had a good discussion. I referred one of my friends. He too cleared all his rounds before getting rejected by same person. His experience was even more awful but I would request him to share his experience. Overall a good opportunity got wasted to a totally unnecessary round which added no value.
