      Microbiology Lab Tech Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at SGS (Fairfield, NJ) in Jul 2017

      Interview

I applied over the weekend and was contacted first thing on Monday morning through a recruiter. A phone and skype interview was done with the recruiter. The following week I was scheduled for a 2:00pm interview with the microbiology lab manager at the facility. I arrived early and the atmosphere was very professional. The lab manager was busy so a "senior" microbiology lab staff started to interview me. He was very relaxed and asked about my personal attributes and work ethic. He then left the conference room we were in to go find the lab manager I was scheduled to interview with. In the 10 minutes I was left alone, multiple staff came in telling me they had a meeting scheduled in the room. The lab manager quickly opened the door and hastily told me to follow her with no explanation of who she was. I followed her into her office where she immediately went to her desk and continued her telephone conversation. Several minutes later she finally finished her phone call and started the interview. She was very condescending about my college coursework (I received a biology degree from one of the top 50 schools in the nation). She also stated that there was no room for idle chatter and they are a fast paced lab, meanwhile through the glass windows all the employees were standing around talking and not working. After I asked about the turnaround rate for the staff, she revealed that high level senior scientists were terminated after falsifying data. That caused this particular location to prematurely promote everyone. This location, at least in the microbiology department, has a severe problem, disrespectful management, and very disorganized priorities for promoting staff that do not know the techniques they have to teach the new hires.
