      Interview

They are growing quickly and, I think as a result are pretty disorganized. I had a brief talk with a recruiter who I don't think works for the company but did her best to explain a little bit about what they do and what they are looking for. I expressed interest and was expecting to hear from someone about a specific role, but the next thing that happened was an email with a .zip file containing a Node/React project that was a simplified example of an app they support with some instructions for changes to make to the project and the expectation to work 4-6 hours on it. Normally I would end the interview there, it's a little too much like unpaid labor for my taste and I didn't know much about the role, but I emailed them with some questions, found the role intriguing enough that I decided to go ahead and work on it. I don't know if the intention was to accomplish the requirements in the given time or to accomplish them while demonstrating good desing, but I did the latter and decided not too work too much over the allotted time. The interview started with two developers. One of them never looked up from his computer and seemed annoyed to be there. The other one was nice and I had a good discussion with him but it was clear that neither one had looked at the code I wrote in advance. I got the sense that they decided "no" early into the interview process and sure enough was told that over the phone. The part I found to be really unprofessional was that they adamantly declined to provide any feedback. To expect that type of time commitment I would expect at least someone to, you know, look at what I wrote! And some feedback would be good. While that part of the process was annoying, if you don't mind spending that time the coding assesment would be a good learning exercise for a beginner/novice developer as it hits on several key concepts and the pay they were offering was better than most companies. It seems like right now they want good engineers that can sit down and grind! They also will fly you to Austin every couple of months for team meetings which I think is a good balance between in-person and remote.
