      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Queensland Museum (Brisbane) in Oct 2022

      Interview

I recently went through an interview process for a role in the same industry that I had been working in for six years, and I must say it was a rather disappointing experience. The company's interview process left me with mixed feelings and a sense of unfulfilled promise. The interview itself consisted of a five-person panel, which included the director, two senior staff members, an administrator, and an external interviewer. This initial interview phase went quite smoothly, and I felt confident in my performance. The panel seemed receptive to my qualifications and experiences. Subsequently, I was invited for an informal meet and greet with the team director and two senior, long-term team members. This meeting was also pleasant, and it gave me the impression that things were progressing positively. It seemed like a natural step towards the next phase of the hiring process. The company requested my references, and my referees provided glowing recommendations, going into detail about my qualifications and skills. This reinforced my belief that I was on track to secure the position. However, here's where the process took a frustrating turn. After submitting my references, there was a significant delay in communication. I received a personal text from the director apologising for the wait and indicating that they were "finalising paperwork." This message led me to believe that I ultimately had the role (I don't care about someone else's paperwork being finalised!), especially since they had already contacted my references. Eventually, I received a call, but it was not the news I had been expecting. I was informed that I did not get the role, and it was given to someone who had previously worked for the company. This decision raised suspicions about internal influence in the hiring process, despite government regulations meant to prevent such practices. Regardless of the internal politics, what was most disheartening was the way the entire process was managed. The communication was inconsistent and left me hanging for extended periods, only to be met with disappointing news in the end. In conclusion, my experience with this company's interview process was far from ideal. While I understand that not every applicant can be successful, the way communication was handled was ultimately unprofessional and disappointing.
