      Frontend Engineer Interview

      Apr 28, 2025
      Anonymous employee
      Berlin
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Qonto (Berlin) in Apr 2025

      Interview

The interview process includes 5 main steps: 1. Initial screening with a member of the talent acquisition team (30min-1h). 2. Manager interview (1h). 3. Take-home skills test assignment (up to 3 days to complete). 4. Skills test assignment debrief (1h). 5. Final interview with the head of Web. After each round, a Talent Acquisition team member organizes a 15-20-minute feedback session. There you would receive feedback about the previous round, define areas to improve, will have a chance to give your feedback about the process. I always felt their support during the interviews. Every interviewer has been more partner and we had a great cooperation. The talent acquisition team does their best to support you and share everything that might be helpful to prepare. Do not hesitate to ask any questions during working hours, and they will get back to you within a few hours. The entire process takes no longer than 20 days, and the feedback after each round has been given within 24 hours. The process is built in a way that everyone can conduct an interview, and there are no big delays in case of emergency (someone is off or can't conduct an interview). I would definitely recommend giving it a try if you're interested in Qonto's product, amazing culture, and strong processes.

      Interview questions [4]

      Question 1

First round - HR screening: general introduction of your background/experiences. Biggest challenges/achievements. There might also be a short assignment to find inconsistencies in a Figma design.
      Answer question

      Question 2

Second round - Manager interview: 2 live code tasks, HTML/CSS code review, and simple JS functionality. After that, 2-3 behavioral questions to demonstrate your willingness to receive and apply feedback, and learn from your mistakes.
      1 Answer

      Question 3

Third and Fourth rounds - skill test and debrief: choose technologies you want to use, try to implement complex things on your own, don't forget to pay attention to testing and clean code. 75% of the debrief session will be yours to present your solutions, find areas for scaling/improvements, and accept valuable feedback.
      Answer question

      Question 4

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Qonto

      Interview

The interview process at Qonto was one of the most well-structured and supportive experiences I've had. It included five main steps: 1. Initial screening with Talent Acquisition Manager 2. Engineering Manager interview 3. Take-home technical assignment (real-world scenario) 4. Technical debrief with Staff Engineer 5. Final interview with the Head of Web After each step, I received a 15–20 minute feedback call. They shared clear, constructive insights and were always available to answer questions quickly. Special thanks to Julie, who ensured the whole process ran smoothly and transparently. Each interviewer was collaborative and thoughtful, the conversations felt more like working with future teammates than traditional assessments. - Engineering Manager walked through live coding with me and answered my questions with great openness. He also shared valuable insights into Qonto’s ongoing migration from Ember to React highlighting their incremental, component-first approach and the importance of cross-functional collaboration. He emphasized that engineers are expected to contribute to both code and decisions, and shared how Qonto applies PDCA cycles to continuously improve. - Staff Engineer asked well-rounded questions about architectural decisions, accessibility, testing strategies, and SCSS structure. He also gave context on Qonto’s engineering structure, RFC process, and how teams align on shared standards and regulatory constraints across markets. The final interview with the Head of Frontend focused on product mindset, shared ownership, and long-term improvement. It felt more like a mutual conversation than an evaluation centered on collaboration, diversity, trust, and creating a meaningful engineering environment. After all, I was confident that Qonto was a place where I could grow and contribute meaningfully - not only as an engineer, but also as part of a diverse/supportive team. The process moved quickly, with feedback within 24 hours and everything wrapped up in about 20 days. It gave me confidence that Qonto values not just technical skill, but mindset and alignment with their values. - Fast, clear feedback after each step - Realistic technical assignment - Supportive, responsive Talent team - Strong focus on collaboration and culture - Several steps, but each one adds value

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Qonto in Oct 2024

      Interview

The process consisted of several video interviews mixed with some small coding exercises, as well as a take-home test with subsequent review in a call. It took just 20 days from first contact to offer and I received some feedback after each step. The tone of the conversations was always very positive and friendly, people were happy (and had time) to answer questions, exchange opinions and go into considerable details on relevant topics. The focus was mainly on the practical experience, there were no trick questions.

      Interview questions [3]

      Question 1

Practical exercises included, finding errors in a UI design, debugging and refining a JS function to bring data from an API, reviewing some HTML and CSS.
      Answer question

      Question 2

Take-home test was to implement a provided design to fetch and display some data. There were no restrictions on the technology to be used.
      Answer question

      Question 3

Final interview included a number of situational questions about past experiences regarding adaptability, proactivity and keeping your skills up to date, again with ample time for my questions.
