      Community Manager Interview

      May 16, 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Outschool (San Francisco, CA) in Apr 2018

      Interview

I wrote the below review after I hadn’t heard from anyone at Outschool for a week, so assumed I hadn’t gotten the position. But three weeks later, I still haven’t gotten so much as a response to my thank you emails, or even just a simple rejection email or call. They aren’t the only company I’ve encountered that can’t seem to be bothered to follow through with the people they haven’t decided to hire, but I really thought this group of people were different. So that was really disappointing. I wish companies practiced being as kind and respectful to the people they don’t hire as the ones they do. “While I wasn’t offered the position, I have nothing but nice things to say about this company and the people who work here. Everyone was exceedingly intelligent, thoughtful, and above all: really kind. They’ve created an important product with implications that is life-changing for educators struggling with income, and for students/parents struggling with the limitations in their schools. And I know they’ve also done all this with a lot of morality in mind. This was, by far, the most civil and humane interview process I’ve ever experienced. I applied online, was contacted shortly thereafter for a phone screen, and after that asked to come into the office for a 4-hour interview. While I selfishly wish that I had had the chance to create some work for them outside of the interview process, as I know I personally struggle with creation in front of audience, it was very mindful and respectful of my time to make the written exercises a part of my scheduled interview time (as opposed to the majority of companies who ask for hours and hours of homework, prior to and sometimes post interview, that you rarely receive any meaningful feedback on). All the questions/exercises that were asked were thoughtful, reasoned, and relevant to the job. And everyone was mindful and present during our conversations. The interview ended with a lunch at a nearby restaurant where the conversation was casual, and it was refreshing to get to know everyone as a group and on a more personal level. It also showed that this is not an overly stressed out workplace where they work through lunch, but genuinely people who value each other and a work-life balance. I wish them the best, and look forward to watching this company grow, as I’m sure only great things are ahead for them. I hope I eventually land at a place as wonderful as Outschool.”
