I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at National Park Service (New York, NY) in Apr 2016
Interview
The interview was done by phone, but was fairly extensive. I spent a total of 2 hours on the phone with a supervisor discussing my motives for being a Ranger and relaying my knowledge of the NPS, related government agencies/departments as well as the history and geology of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
There was an availability check over email (with some questions), then about a week or two after that, a standard phone interview with the hiring manager. The offer came about a week or so later.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
What interpretive topics do you find most interesting? What about this park makes you want to work here?
For me, it was always done via a phone call. I was asked about my education, experience, and what I could bring to the park. Also why I exactly wanted to work at that specific park as well. Sometimes I would be asked about my greatest professional strengths and weakness. Also, for interpretation, what my favorite areas of interpretation would be. Overall, interviews would last between 30 minutes to one hour.
