Was introduced to workers in the design department and showed my portfolio to some people in the art director's office. There didn't seem to be much formality to the discussion.

How is your portfolio relevant to the company style?
I think you may have the wrong company; we don't have an office in New York (though we do hire experienced Sales professionals to work remote in the area).
