      Salesforce Functional Specialist Interview

      May 12, 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Spencer, WV
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Merkle (Spencer, WV) in Apr 2025

      Interview

Was contacted for a video screen then scheduled for an interview with the Hiring Manager, Jarod Sams, that went very well. I was then invited to interview with Tara Shelton and Mel Hinchliffe. The first question I was asked by Mel was what clouds I have experience working with so I explained that the companies I worked with have their own managed package so I didn't work with specific clouds. I did mention that I have worked with Sales cloud in Trailhead and mentioned that I have 37 super badges in Trailhead. Those all involved Sales Cloud and completing real world scenarios in a Salesforce org. She then asked me what 5 features I struggle with in Salesforce. This through me off because I couldn't think of any that I struggle with so tried to figure out what the correct answer was that she was looking for. I'm here to tell them what I can do well, not what I struggle with. If she had asked what features I have worked with, I could have listed off all of my experience but instead was sitting there trying to think about what I struggle with so that I can make myself look bad through the entire interview. I am neurodivergent and a literal thinker so if there is some unspoken correct answer for these questions, I can't get that and I don't think that I should have to. Once I struggled with that, she goes on about what the job entails and that they are trying figure out if I'll be able to do the job. If you want to know if I can do it, then ask me what I can do and not what I can't do. She then told me that it sounds like I don't have much experience outside of the two managed packages I work with and that Trailhead was often outdated so experience there doesn't really mean anything. This is the beginning of the interview. At that point I felt like there was no point in going forward. All of the the hard work I put in on Trailhead earning badges and super badges that other companies see as useful has been invalidated. I used Trailhead to study for the 7 Salesforce Certification Exams that I passed. Are those also out dated? I knew at that moment that this job I really wanted and knew that I would be a great fit for was not going to happen just because this lady was so disconnected from the Salesforce community and anything outside of what she does as work. It's not fair to not get the job because the person interviewing you is completely clueless. One other thing I would like to add to enlighten her and anyone else that might read this that interview others for Salesforce positions, if a person knows Salesforce and has experience configuring Salesforce, it doesn't matter what clouds or managed packages they worked with. They all use objects, fields, records, flows, approval processes, and anything else in setup that is used to configure anything in any cloud. If you know how to use these tools, the cloud doesn't matter. This experience put me in a state of not knowing what to do anymore. I had no motivation to go on Trailhead and continue learning for a while before I realized this person just doesn't know what she's talking about. Most people in the Salesforce ecosystem know that Trailhead is not outdated and super badges are considered a credential where cheating is taken seriously and if you get help on them, you can lose a certification as well as anyone who helps you.
