I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Merkle (Barcelona) in Dec 2018
Interview
I had a very positive experience regarding the hiring process.
I first had a phone interview with HR, the second was a zoom interview with one of the managers and a team member with a similar position to the one I was applying for and then I was invited to an in-person group session at the offices in Barcelona.
The phone interviews were easy and fun.
Questions were the typical ones: About yourself, your personality and your background as well as some situational questions (Focused mainly on data analysis and attention to detail)
The group dynamic/interview lasted around 4 hours.
We were around 10 candidates (each of us from a different country), 2 HR people and around 4 team members.
The day happened as follows:
1. Welcome Briefing - A presentation from us about Merkle and the role.
2. A presentation from each of the candidates lasting 5 minutes responding:
- Introduce Yourself: Name + Background (very briefly)
- If you could meet anyone who would it be and why?
- One of the following role related question (They sent them to us a couple of days before the interview) :
What are the benefits of personalising marketing messages?
What are the key differences between marketing and advertising?
What is GDPR and why is it important?
What is email bounce? what is the difference between hard and soft bounce?
What is a single customer view?
What are un-subscribes?
Why is it important to use control groups in campaigns?
What are the advantages of using more than one channel in a digital marketing campaign?
How should an A/B test be performed? What is the purpose?
How can you measure the success of a digital marketing campaign?
3. Group Task ( The one where you are on a boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and you have to put in order which of the belongings you saved are the most important ones in order to survive)
4. Coffee and informal talk with one member of the team (20-30 mins)
5. Individual Logic Test. Be ready for some programming logic (there were a couple of loops and you had to explain what were they doing when they would stop and a few more things) and then to solve some equations. Some of them easier than others.
6. Shadowing (20-30 min) Every candidate spent with a peer in order to understand the daily basis of the job. (This part was SUPER USEFUL. Thank you Merkle!!! Every company should do the same!!!!)
7. Brief individual interview with 2 members of the team. They asked a few questions about how did you feel during the day, what do you think about the role, why do you want the role (if you want it, after the shadowing I realized is not for everybody!), why are you an ideal candidate for the role, why Barcelona...
Everybody was super nice and helpful during the whole process, except a pretty arrogant interviewer called Peter who made me feel pretty uncomfortable and asked me some questions in a very despotic way that I found a bit...just not very welcoming as everyone else, but besides that, which is minimal, everybody was super nice and the process was interesting, fun and well-organised! Well- done Merkle!
Advice to HR: The only little thing I would have liked is to receive a bit more personal rejection email.
It was a super general "Thank you for applying" automatic message coming from a no-reply address that went to my spam folder. I understand that is not very pleasant to say no to candidates but...C'mon, sending the very exact email that you send to people who you're not gonna even bother to interview after three interviews and after making people travel to Barcelona at their own expenses... I expected a bit more empathy taking into account how great you organized and handled everything else.
