Answered an ad on Craigslist for the Bradenton Marriott, owned by Ocean Properties. Ad said "banquet server", going rate for that in this area ranges from a low of $10 to a high of $15, some places share the gratuity with the workers, some don't. Answered ad, received a response to come in and fill out the application in person. Did that, waited a week, F&B Manager calls to say he wants to move forward and to come in to complete paperwork. Go in, the paperwork consists only of one form requiring my signature to check work references. We are apparently not at the point of filling out the tax paperwork for a hire. Manager says after this he wants another meeting with me and the General Manager, then with him again. This is 4 visits to this place and the manager lets slip yesterday that they pay minimum wage for the Bistro part of the job. The wage is not even remotely competitive or reasonable given the fact it is the holidays and it is high season in Florida. When answering the ad I expected to be offered at least $12 an hour, which is more in line with a median salary for on-call banquet servers. Seems like bait and switch to me. Run an ad for one thing, but offer something much less appealing and ridiculous level of pay when you get the "sucker" coming in.
