Anonymous Employee in Geneva
I interviewed at International Institute for Sustainable Development (Geneva)
Applied for a different position but they reviewed my application after 3 months and i sent me to a different department, which was nice in the sense of they didn’t just throw my application aside
- About SDGs and community ecosystems

The interviewers wanted to get right into the questions. The questions were clear and open-ended. In this phase, they used this technique to screen candidates to narrow the pool of applicants. They sent an email thank-you note to be part of the process and you were not selected, which is really appreciated as a job seeker.
- 1. Tell Me About Yourself 2. What do you know about our organization? 3. Do you have any questions for me?

The interview process was smooth. The interview was only conducted by my future supervisor at the institution and by no-one else. Some questions were asked about my interests and my availability and the role was thoroughly explained to me. Overall it was quite positive.
- Why I was interested in this role? What my availability was?

Extensive process, with three stages. First, a recorded video answering technical questions, then a panel interview with both behavioural and other technical questions. Finally, a written and quantitative exercise (quantitative exercise depends on nature of position).
- To comment on media coverage of environmental issues.

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at International Institute for Sustainable Development (Ottawa, ON) in Jun 2022
The first interview was with the Manager and the second one was with an Area Coordinator. The process was very smooth, which helped me feel comfortable, especially since both people were very attentive and friendly.
- Will you be able to adapt to a more research-oriented job?

I had an interview for the project manager position, and at first, they were welcoming. They moved on with their lengthy interview process and tests. They were happy with me throughout the interview process (which was very promising). The last request from IISD was asking for references. They ghosted me for weeks; surprisingly, they did not reach out to any of my contacts. Weeks later, they wrote saying, "we moved one." I have no problem with the sudden turn of events; they do not need to select me. However, they had no right to ask for references' contact information without contacting them. How unprofessional. Their lack of respect speaks for itself. How could someone claim to care for the universe; if someone cannot accept others or communicate with them professionally? What a contradiction. Lesson learned: Never get fooled by NGOs pla pla pla and unless they adhere to their promises. I landed a job in a prestigious place, a genuine NGO with six digits salary and much better compensation.
- The questions were not difficult, but it was a lengthy process. The first stage was a one-way interview asking you to answer timed questions while looking at yourself into the camera, followed by an interview with too many panelists as if you are applying for a very VIP position. The last phase was a test that takes you to the reference checks where they only ask for people's contacts without contacting them.

I applied online. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at International Institute for Sustainable Development (Winnipeg, MB) in Feb 2022
Very apt questions were asked. The job description was discussed with views of the company shared. The interviewers introduced themselves with their job designations. Time conscious, reasonable method of interview.
- -Tell me about yourself -Whats your salary expectation? -What are your skill sets

The recruitment process took more than two months: 1) A one-side interview in which you had to record videos of yourself answering questions that you could not prepare beforehand. I did quite well, but to record the videos, IISD used an external platform/website and I have never seen anything giving you more anxiety and stress (i.e. everything is timed, even the 60 seconds you are allowed to think about what to answer)! Personally, I find it quite unfair to not give the candidate the possibility to ask questions, making this first step of the recruitment process rather alienating. 2) Writing test: I was asked to write a short essay on climate change adaptation. Even in this phase, the candidate was not allowed to ask any question to the hiring managers, or the other employers in the team. 3) An online interview: the interview took place online, it was rather technical and with a lot of practical questions. 4) A final in-person interview: the interview was even more technical, asking very detailed questions, such as: name the SDGs, or details of environmental policies. Personally, I do not think I need to know this information by heart, as I know where to find the information. I found the whole process not very transparent and extremely long. 4 rounds of selection process, every step was rather time-consuming, requiring lots of preparation. This selection process is definitely something that demotivates a candidate, rather than keeping him/her excited about a new role. At the end, I was just happy it was over! Furthermore, I always had the feeling that they had someone internal applying for the post.
- - Tell us how you learnt quantitative and qualitative research tools and a project you applied them to. - What are the objectives set in the EU Green Deal? - What is the GEF?

I applied online. I interviewed at International Institute for Sustainable Development in Sept 2021
The interview process began with an automated question and answer session and then moved on to a virtual interview with the Advisor who was recruiting an assistant and ended with an interview with the head of unit.
- Why is this field of interest to you?

untruthful recruitment process; job posting states candidate can work in either Toronto or Ottawa, interview also states flexibility, then employment contract arrives and it only states Ottawa office and expected to locate within 6 months or employment will terminate. What a waste of time.
