      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Sep 17, 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at HighGear in Jul 2020

      Interview

Initial contact was with who I believe was the CEO. One of the more negative experiences I've had. One of the first questions I was asked was: "Explain something algorithmically complex that you've worked on." That question is so open-ended I declined to answer even after asking a few clarifying questions. Sounds like something you would ask if you knew nothing about the job and just heard of what "algorithms" are. A few other questions along those lines, "What's a difficult project you've worked on?", "Why should we hire you?", etc. "Why should we hire you?" Is a poor question I feel. There are ways to get a sense of the person without making them sell themselves. Interviews are a two way conversation and humility is itself a virtue. He also went on a tangent about how the company has Christian values, which is strange and feels slightly illegal, or at least straddles the line of legality. Just say you value empathy, honesty, and transparency. Things everyone would understand and be comfortable with that doesn't require you bringing religion into the conversation. They really like their product(s) and think the world of their technical aptitude but I never got a good idea of how they work or what their environment is like because I don't have a ready-made answer for a complicated algorithm I've worked on and don't like to brag about myself.
