      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Hanover Research in Apr 2014

      Interview

Hanover is clearly trying to ramp up their online profile (you can see from their active responses to Glassdoor reviews) and are heavily recruiting candidates from outside the organization, instead of promoting from within. I was cold-called by a Hanover HR specialist recently. I was interested in the Content Director position once they described it in detail, passed the phone interview and moved on to the Copy Write Editing interview. They provide a typical document you would see from one of your supervisees on your Hanover team, meant for a client, and you, as the Content Director, are supposed to make sure it satisfies the asked for deliverables and answers the research question. Well, if this is what counts for a "deliverable" then we are in the end times because when I say this document was an embarrassment, it was horrific, and a 2 year old could have produced something better with crayons. If that is what their college-graduate analysts are producing, I shudder for the clients who are paying huge sums of money for this garbage. I completely revamped it, proper footnotes, headers/footers, proper citations, paragraphs, grammar/spelling you name it, including actually providing a thoughtful analysis of the problem at hand, accomplished through a simple Google search that took me no more than 15 solid minutes, and included their logo. Well, they called me back and said I wasnt quite ready for their Content Director position, but mmmaaaayybbbeee I'd be interested in their Analyst position and I could move up quickly and blah blah blah. Felt 100% like a classic bait and switch, only to be told "my writing style wasnt Hanover's"? They must have meant my style conformed to the English language and MLA guidelines because the work product they showed me did neither, and was just appallingly sad. If a student handed me that, I would have laughed in their faces. It was a strange process to say the very least, and a waste of time considering they initially attempted to recruit me. At the most, it was just insulting and a waste of time.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you did not enjoy the interview process. The homework assignment is not an actual report but a creation specifically designed for the recruiting process to gauge an editor's skills within a fixed period of time. Successful edits focus on more than just making the document visually appealing; they focus on checking the data and content for accuracy, checking the sources for plagiarism, correct citations, etc. along with a basic spelling, punctuation and typographic error check. We have found this assessment to also be a good predictor for how a new Content Director would provide feedback and coaching to a novice researcher. Whether he/she would be patient, considerate and helpful ultimately impacts the quality of the next project their researchers work on. Finally, I wanted to clarify that Hanover does not cold call candidates. Our team will reach out to candidates through LinkedIn or associations.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Hanover Research (Arlington, VA) in Jul 2021

      Interview

I submitted my application in late June (2021). Then, after only four days I was contacted by a recruiter for a phone conversation to see if I’d meet qualifications. Within the conversation she expressed I would need to complete an assignment within five days for a quick turn around. This was assigned right before the Fourth of July Holiday with no extension. I completed the assignment and submitted it that Monday. After a week of no response I reached out and received an automatic response that the recruiter was out of office until mid-July. After another week I was contacted with positive feedback and asked to schedule a panel interview. In the interim, I was asked to complete a personality assessment with a few hours turn around time. I took the advice of the recruiter, did my homework, and thought the interview went very well. There was amazing dialogue and the structure of my answers genuinely impressed the panel. I was given a time frame of “a few weeks” until I hear back. After 6 business days, within the 5-7 business day window, I was contacted and told the team enjoyed our conversations and was impressed with my background but they went with someone that had a bit more expertise. It was a bittersweet outcome but the company was timely and response.

They are very adaptable to questioning and express interest in your genuine ability. A very forward team about intelligence that seeks highly qualified candidates.
