The interview process in psychiatric nursing is a structured, therapeutic interaction used to gather subjective and objective data. It begins with establishing rapport and trust, ensuring privacy, and explaining confidentiality. The nurse uses open-ended questions, active listening, observation of behavior, mood, and thought processes, and clarifies responses. The interview includes assessment of mental status, risk (suicide or harm), medical history, medications, and social factors to guide diagnosis and treatment planning.
