      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Mar 29, 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Vancouver, BC
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at FISPAN (Vancouver, BC) in Feb 2017

      Interview

Referral through a friend so first meeting was with the Tech Lead. More the equivalent of a phone interview, we discussed a bit of my history, what the company was all about, the position, and a bit of technology trends. A very nice office space. Seems like a really cool company. I ended up getting an offer from another company the next day so never continued on with them. Though the next step would have been a background check since they are a financial company.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Discussed a bit of Docker Swarm Mode networking and some similar problems we both had with it.

      Vancouver, BC
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at FISPAN (Vancouver, BC) in May 2021

      Interview

There was one round of one to one with the head of business integrations. After that they had sent an online time bound test containing system designing and coding question. Felt like they specifically focus more on the precision of data handling in the code rather than the logic. I couldn't finish it on time, so didn't got a call for next round.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Coding question about a calculation question which involved precision of atleast 6-7 didgits.

      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Dec 22, 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Toronto, ON
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at FISPAN (Toronto, ON) in Nov 2020

      Interview

I don't usually write interview feedback but for a terrible interview like FISPAN's, I'd like everyone to know my experience. It's by far the worst interview I've ever done with any company. They set up two 1 hour interviews which easily turn into 1:30 or 1:40 and this happens spontaneously. I was asked if I was free to continue and since I'm already invested I didn't want to say no. The number of questions they had in mind; there's no way this was supposed to be an hour-long interview. Why not setup a 90 min interview right at the beginning so that people don't miss out on other stuff and plan it accordingly? My first "1-hour interview" went fine. They asked me about my experience, asked me to review some code, and design an API. They had concerns that I didn't use Java streams for Kafka aggregations but after explaining the use cases I think they were okay. In my second "1-hour interview" they asked me to write a simple Java program. It was related to aggregations. I wrote the program but they were expecting me to write the code using Java streams which I couldn't and to be honest, I don't think I've ever written a proper stream code without Googling it. And having been working on Node and Typescript for the last few months there was no way I would've written it using streams. The next question was a SQL query to get data from two tables and count. I suggested I'd do a join and use the count function but I guess they needed a proper functioning query. The last part was writing API endpoints in which one of the questions that came up was the difference between PUT and POST. After giving a few differences they were expecting me to say one is idempotent and the other isn't. One other question was to respond with only specific fields instead of a POJO as a response-entity. I had two different ways but they were both graphql ways of doing things according to them. Again they were expecting something very specific. In the final feedback, they made it sound like I lied about my experience with Kafka because I didn't use streams. This time they didn't even bother to clarify like in the previous round. What, are you folks not open to new suggestions/techniques? All in all, I think I wasted my time interviewing for FISPAN. I should've cut both the interviews at 1-hour mark. They claim that they are not like conventional banks and they're innovative but I don't think they are. I don't think they'd be open to new ways of doing things either judging by how close minded they were during the interviews. I don't have a list of companies that I don't ever wish to interview with but I think I'm going to start one now. Starting with FISPAN.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I have few questions already mentioned in my interview process but here's a list 1) Review code. 2) Design an API 3) Write a JAVA code. Related to aggregating something. 4) SQL query 5) REST endpoints design.
