Interview
It was over the phone. About 30 mins long. It was only the first of three stages and I heard back from them the next day. This was great for me because though I was denied, I had closure and could move on to concentrate on other endeavors.
Email the professor, have a conversation. Then they will usually ask about your relevant classes and determine if you are a good fit. Usually strong interest will get the job.

Interview
It was a quick 60 minute chat with a behavioural interview followed by a technical round related to research writing. The interviewer was warm and friendly. It was conducted online via Zoom and we worked collaboratively on a google doc to look at my writing and research process.
