I got the feeling the entire time that the interview was part of a reporting structure - to show to the president of the university and their board that yes, they did indeed interview qualified professionals for a newly-created position.
They never asked me any real questions, they never took notes. I was beyond qualified for the job, but my interview ended very quickly after they asked me if I was Lutheran and I replied that I was not.
I just looked on their website, and it appears they never hired the position I interviewed for. When I interviewed, they had just undergone a major leadership change and they appeared to still be in the throes of transition. It was clear to me that the two people who interviewed me knew nothing about communications. They didn't know about the processes, resources, tools, or procedures.
While I understand that Concordia reserves the right to show preference to Lutherans, any time any organization reserves the right to show preference to any kind of self-identified group, whether it be based on religion, ethnicity or something else - that is a bullet to be dodged.
