      Senior Backend Engineer Interview

      Sep 14, 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Compass

      Interview

Recruiter reached out through linkedin and said my profile matched exactly what they were looking for and did not even ask for resume etc. Time was setup for phone interview. During the interview, the interviewer seemed in a rush and kinda disinterested. Gave me a problem and was asked to code in codepair. I completed the coding exercise with no issues with all tests passing. Remaining 5 mins i asked interviewer question on how it was to work there. Next day, recruiter emails me saying they cant move forward and that other candidates better fitted the job description. If that was true then why even bother with a phone interviewer and wasting candidates time??? Very unprofessional!

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Compass (New York, NY) in Apr 2019

      Interview

Regular software company interview process. Starts with the technical phone screen interview. And this is where their unprofessionalism started. My phone screen interviewer was totally rude. First of all he called me 10 mins late, then was very rude and at times condescending. I was able to write the optimal code for his question (checked it later also) and as I was running a couple of test cases, he just cut me off and end the interview without even giving me the chance to ask him any question. I am to date not sure what might have caused that sudden cut-off. I am an interviewer at my company and even if I don't like anyone still I ll give him a fair chance. This guy seems determined to reject me no matter what I have done. May be their position might have been filled (as I was busy and scheduled my phone screen couple of weeks later) but still be little professional in interviews. May be my bad luck encountering this type of person and rest of the company is fine. But if they keep such people as the first real point of contact (phone screeners), then I would not recommend anyone to interview with them as this type of behavior is very negative and seems like an utter waste of time for everyone.
