I applied in-person. I interviewed at Chung Hwa Bookstore (Flushing, NY) in Mar 2014
Interview
I was introduced by a friend who was leaving the bookstore for other jobs. My friend was recognized as one of the best worker in the bookstore, plus I kind of bothered them after "interview" to see if I got employed. Eventually they gave in and decided to employ me. I think they intended to say no, because they hired another new guy right before me.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
(What sex are you? Obviously they won't ask that, but given the low number of male employee, they will most likely employ more new male employees than females)
Can you speak, read, and write Mandarin Chinese? (Required Skill)
Can you speak any other Chinese dialects? (Cantonese is a plus, thought other ones are also welcome)
What time are you available? (If you can't cover the empty time blocks left open by the existing employees, then you won't get in, no matter how qualified you are.)
How long do you think you can work here? (preferably 2 years at least, though some have been accepted for promising to stay 1 year)
Skills and traits that can help you sell yourself: bookworm (Chinese and/or English), good memory, fast learner, proactive, interpersonal skill, sales experience, tech savvy (smart phone, tablet, TV antenna, TV box like "TVpad", computer, Excel, Word, printer operation, cash register operation), bilingual (Mandarin & English), frequent customer of the store...etc.
