I applied through university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Caterpillar (Champaign, IL) in Sep 2015
Interview
All of the questions were behavioral questions and were expected to be answered in the STAR format. It consisted of two interviewers back to back for approximately one hour total. Some of the questions overlapped so they didn't require that the candidate go over those in too much detail. Technical questions weren't asked (it appeared that they assumed competence based on the GPA of the student at a university). Overall it was a fairly easy interview albeit a bit tiring.

Question 1
Describe a time when you had to make a hard decision. How did you handle the situation and what was the result?
First round is a 30 minute interview with someone in your department. Goes over your resume and asks questions about it. The interviewer is trying to get to know you and your skills better,
I applied online. The process took 5 months. I interviewed at Caterpillar (Larne, Northern Ireland) in Feb 2023
Interview
I had a Teams interview with two IT professionals and it was good. They asked me competency questions and situational questions. They were more focused on adaptability than anything else and even though it was a technical role they did not focus a lot on that.

Question 1
How did you adapt in a situation were they suddenly changed your plans?
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Caterpillar in Nov 2016
Interview
It wasn't anything too hard and this was for their site in Illinois. The whole process took around a month. An hour phone interview with two people who were very pleasant and easy-going. You have to follow the STAR format. All the questions were based on experiences I had and how I handled them. Don't get discouraged if they don't answer or say anything right away, they like to take notes and make sure they have everything down. They took back the offer they made to me because my overall GPA wasn't a 3.0 even though my major GPA was very high, which was reasonable in my opinion. Make sure all that is in order before applying.
