      Senior Front End Developer Interview

      Sep 6, 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Montreal, QC
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at CapIntel (Montreal, QC) in May 2024

      Interview

The interview process consisted of 3 interviews; Hr, head of engineering, code challenge, offer. HR interview was standard and went well. Head of engineering was a nice person. We had a good conversation which was mostly behavioral questions, nothing technical. 3rd was the code challenge and this is where things started to go downhill. Despite being advertised as a front end position, there were 4 main questions on the code challenge and most of it had nothing to do with a front end developer. The first was concerning designing a REST API, which is back end. The second was to design a function based on sorting some data and printing it to a console (again back end related). The 3rd question was related to back end architecture and data modelling. The 4th question was the only front end related question however it was very ambiguous. It required designing a front end architecture using diagrams, drawings, etc. for the a problem domain. No actual coding involved, just to talk about creating different modules and which module would handle what responsibilities. Over all this was a poorly constructed challenge because it was clearly not directed towards a front end developer, whom shouldn't be expected to have knowledge of the subject matter they asked for, despite me being a full stack developer with several years experience. There was also no continuity from start to finish. Each question was something completely different. I received feedback later than expected because they were dealing with some last minute restructuring (oh oh, unexpected turnaround in the team I am applying for). My submission was reviewed on a friday and I received an email indicating they were not moving forward with my candidacy. They did not give me any details as to why. I had to ask for specific constructive feedback which I was hoping would have been provided. The feedback I was given demonstrated that my code challenge was barely looked over. The comments mentioned that while they could see I was clearly competent, the were looking for more in depth answers for one question. For others I was told I did not address the requirements, despite the questions being very subjective in the first place. I felt that up until the code challenge I was taken seriously, however it seemed like my challenge was handed off to someone with very little time on their hands and no real incentive to validate my work. From what information I gathered during my interviews and the experience with the code challenge, I believe I dodged a bullet.

Thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed feedback about your interview experience with us. It’s clear you’ve put a lot of thought into this, and we genuinely appreciate it. We're happy to hear your initial interview with HR went well. Your insights about the code challenge not aligning with the front-end role you applied for have been especially helpful. Since your interview in April, we’ve made adjustments to our technical assessments to ensure they are differentiated for front-end and back-end positions. This change is a direct result of feedback like yours, and we’re confident it will improve the experience for future candidates. I also understand the frustration with the delay in feedback. We aim to provide timely, constructive feedback to all candidates, and it seems we fell short in this instance. We will continue to work on improving our process to better manage timelines with candidates. If you wish to discuss your experience further, please email tande@capintel.com and someone from our Recruiting team will get back to you. Thank you again for your thoughtful feedback!
