I met with someone from HR and had a lovely discussion. After that, I sat and waited more than 45 minutes for the restaurant manager to come and interview me. When he finally arrived, I could tell he was opposed to my candidacy upon first glance.
The manager asked some basic interview questions but was very dismissive of my answers. He seemed irritated and cut me off more than once. He spoke in a caustic, condescending manner that suggested he was only talking to me because the higher-ups made him. He then proceeded to ask me a series of questions that were not relevant to the position; i.e., several pay grades above a busser or food runner and more on the level of food critic/master sommelier/state prosecutor.
When I mentioned that my aim was to work hard, learn the menu, familiarize myself with the restaurant and move up to a server role, he glared at me and said nothing. Then, he asked if I would consider "hostessing" -- which is basically a lower paying, untipped position often relegated to pretty women. Needless to say, I found the benevolent sexism not only offensive but highly problematic. HIGHLY.
All in all, my experience with the interview process at Blue Duck Tavern was demoralizing and I regret applying to this company. I pretty much wasted $19 in parking and 2+ hours of my life. Do yourself a favor and don't even bother applying here -- that is, unless you like punitive job interview settings with antagonistic managers who don't value your time.
(For context, I am a college educated female with over 2 years of restaurant experience. I applied to a position that required no prior experience or formal education.)
