I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Block (San Francisco, CA) in Dec 2020
Interview
The team at Square has been great to work with. They were communicative and personable at every step of the process.
I worked with a team of recruiters within the "Sellers" org and the "Directory" team, and they were excellent. At every step of the process, they were responsive and generous with their time and attention.
On the day of the on-site, I got a chance to talk to a wide cross section of people from Square of varying backgrounds, skill levels, and teams. I felt that they all conducted a firm but fair interview and were forthcoming with information about their team and Square at large, even some of the rough edges. It was a long day of interviews, but overall a positive experience - beginning to end.
I know some of the reviews on here are negative and that initially caused some hesitation, but it didn't reflect my experience at all. I have been actively interviewing with about 8 different prominent Silicon Valley companies for a few weeks now and Square is easily in the top 2 in terms of communication and providing the candidate with as much info as possible to hopefully be successful.
I did the on-site just yesterday, so have not heard whether or not I will receive an offer yet.

Question 1
Design & architect a hotel booking site, as several others have mentioned.
I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Block in Mar 2025
Interview
I applied via the website to a role directly. The first call was a recruiter call to discuss leveling and the interview process. This was an initial screening call with pair programming, then a virtual onsite round of 5 (2 more pair programming, system design, past project with leadership focus, past project with technical focus) interviews, and then team matching. Due to the layoffs, my hiring process was interrupted before an offer could be sent to me though I did find a team match.

Question 1
Implement a rock climbing route and level application
Design a hotel booking system
Had similar experience as others. The interviewer was very young. Before we start, he said let's get this done quickly, with an impatient tone. I was working through the solution and asked if he wants to hear me explaining it. He said, no need just get the solution working, and clearly had no idea what the code actually does. The next day, I received the rejection letter. Their internal recruiter was also not responsive after I asked the reason for rejection.
