      Intermediate 3D Environment Artist Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Beamdog (Montreal, QC) in Feb 2023

      Interview

TL; DR: Applying to Beamdog is an almost guaranteed waste of your time if you are an intermediate artist. The first interview's process was swift for the most part and the interviewer was very nice, so my experience on that side was very positive. The only issue there is that the interviewer does not seem to be a 3D artist so while they do ask pertinent questions and are very amicable, I have to wonder if it serves any purpose to get deeper into a subject or explain your work process in detail if the other person only nods and does not comment on your input at all from their lack of knowledge on the subject. Secondly, the first interview feels a bit moot when no matter how well you do during said interview you will be put through a strenuous week long art test afterwards. This makes the interview process feel useless and little selective. The art test is also pretty frustrating as they only give you 5 days to create a complete 3D scene with a very limiting poly count and no artistic direction whatsoever except for a meager moodboard with very few photos that probably took 5 minutes to collect on Google. It gives off the impression that no effort was put into making the test fun while great effort is expected on your part in return. A single high quality stylized prop done from a concept should be enough to allow someone to judge one's skills and expertise and it would be a lot faster to create and to judge, but no, instead you have to improvise an entire scene in days with no direction and no target aesthetic. Lastly, once you turn your art test in, they thank you and let you know they will reach back in a few days with their decision, but in fact they end up ghosting you for weeks before they eventually decline your application. At least they give you a brief explanation of things to improve, but it does little to help when those things could have easily been fixed given a little bit more time and artistic direction. All in all, this job opportunity was a total waste of my time, an unecessary stress added to an already difficult job hunt and felt like a senior trap, even though it was advertised for intermediate artists. The first clue is how much work they expect you to churn up in a matter of 40hrs. This is a common tactic to test if people will accept to crunch for the test or not because clearly this is not what they would expect of an employee in a single week, that would be ridiculous, yet they ask it of you for a simple art test. The second clue is that this job opportunity has come back on Linkedin several times in the past few months and apparently from the hundreds of applications they receive each time, not a single 3D artist has filled their criteria yet, which is very suspect. It's either that or those roles are consistently being left open because people are leaving every month, which would also be a big warning sign to stay away from this studio. This is what I am going to do from now on and I don't recommend to anyone who is also an intermediate artist to apply for those roles either, it's simply not worth the hassle.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

All matters of generic questions: Tell me a little bit about yourself, how well do you work in teams, how well do you work remotely, what is your process for creating ''insert one of your portfolio pieces'', etc.
