      Engineering Technician Interview

      Jan 8, 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Fort Collins, CO
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Ampt (Fort Collins, CO) in Dec 2018

      Interview

Absolutely abysmal... 1. I felt like during the interview they kept almost trying to warn me away from the job. They were constantly telling me how hard the head engineers were to work with, and told me that they were to "grill me". They all kept mentioning how repetitive and aggravating the job was. It was almost all negative which made me feel uncomfortable on top of the stress of the interview. 2. It wasn't really a grilling, it just didn't make sense. He had computer paper and a marker and wanted me to answer basically what would be multi-part questions from my final exams (VERY in-depth graphs, circuit configurations, the associated equations, and graphs) without a calculator, a computer, or any of the tools I was trained to use in engineering school. Needless to say, I felt clueless during this, so like I mentioned I called my old professors and classmates. They agreed the questions were almost impossible without the tools necessary. My one prof. told me the questions were as complicated as what he was asked at his interview to teach electrical engineering at the Ph.D. university level. 3. All of that being said, for the amount of technical knowledge they expect in a "technician" position (where they tell you-you will not be promoted, and they want you to be with the company for 10+years) they will be hard pressed to find someone with that amount of knowledge ANYWHERE that isn't looking for some advanced/masters level design position with advancement. 4. With all of that said, I knew I wasn't going to get it. Thank you so much for your help, it makes me upset that they told you I lack technical skills when the interview was so informal and lacked any technical discussion or real engineering techniques.

      Question 1

He had computer paper and a marker and wanted me to answer basically what would be multi-part questions from my final exams (VERY in-depth graphs, circuit configurations, the associated equations, and graphs from a wide range of subjects) without a calculator, a computer, or any of the tools I was trained to use as an engineer.
