There is no interview require for the SEW position I applied through the their SWE summer intern portal. And pick the the research topic you are interested, a great if you didn't got into your position you want email the professor who is directing the project will be the a method as I know multiple have used this method to got the position.
The overall process is good. However, it highly depends on what lab you are interviewing. It would be better if you already have some background. I would suggest to read the paper published in the lab that you are interested in.
