      Mechanical Design Engineer Interview

      Oct 5, 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Wilton, CT
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at ASML (Wilton, CT) in Sep 2021

      Interview

The interview consisted of 3 rounds. One HR round and two technical rounds (each an hour and a half long). The first technical round was with the hiring manager and the second one was with a senior engineer. The First round consisted of a combination of HR based questions and technical questions on projects and Solid mechanics

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

1 st Technical round: 1. What was the most challenging project that you worked on? 2. You and your manager/ supervisor don't agree on something. How would you address this issue? 3. Do you like to be a part of a team environment or do you do things better individually? 4. Describe three words that your friends/peers would use to describe you? 5. Asked questions on my projects and made describe them. Asked me how the lessons learnt from those projects would help in a work environment. 6. Hollow shaft and solid shaft of the same material, same length , same weight and same cross sectional area. The rods are subjected to bending loads. Which rod would have a greater resistance to bending and why? How would you compare the stiffness of the rods? 7. What are the ways in which I can go about increasing the spring damping effect? 8. Technical problem to solve on paper on brake systems in cars 9. Problem on screw jack and 4 technical questions around your answer essentially explaining your reasoning for your results. Once you clear the first round you get a call for the technical round. 2nd round: 2 questions. 1 based on Design and the other on precision engineering. Time given was 1 hr to solve. 1. You have 3 parts: Part A -> a solid steel rod of x.xx diameter. The steel rod is cut in half at angle of 45 deg in the middle (surface finish not important) Part B-> a glass tube of y.yy dia. Part C -> Epoxy resin with a working time of 2 hrs You have to come up with a way to insert part A into part b with the central axis's of each of the rods aligned with about 150 microns of tolerance and middle section of the shaft aligned with about 3mm of tolerance. The epoxy has to fill 50 -60% of the spacing without misalignment of the rod and the tube spacing. the epoxy takes 24 hrs to cure. How would you go about designing an apparatus that goes about doing this job. What additional tools would you use? 2. You have 3 legged table and a 4 legged table. Both can be used to withstand loads and both are functional. The tables are precisely flat but the 4 legged table costs 1000$ more than the 3 legged table. i) Which one would you go for if you take cost and stability into consideration? ii) These legs of these tables have a rounded bottom. Why do you think that's the case? Why can't they be flat? iii) what is the minimum number of contact points of two flat surfaces iv) There are 2 precisely manufactured chairs. One made of steel and the other made of a material with infinite stiffness. You do not want the chairs to wobble when some sits on them. Which chair would you pick and why? V) More questions on the table problem with several variations that are hard to list down here.
