      Does Backcountry offer employee discounts?

      Decent discount on outdoor gear

      Pros

Decent employee discount on outdoor gear

      Cons

Since the company was acquired, there was a noticeable shift in culture, and at times the organization felt disorganized and uncomfortable. Work-life balance was poor, and the benefits declined. Boundaries around time off were also not respected. I was asked to work during my PTO on tasks my manager did not want to handle, which was frustrating. I would not recommend working at Backcountry unless you truly needed a job and had no other offers.

Great people, bad pay & leadership

      Pros

      - Amazing coworkers: I met a lot of passionate, talented people in my time at BC. - Gear access & discounts: Employee discount on almost anything on the site, plus pro deals. They have changed the discount a little bit in the last 1-2yrs as well so it's not as good as it used to be.

      Cons

      - Low pay & lack of raises: Staying in & excelling at a role at BC doesn't guarantee any increase. For multiple years in a row they did not give any raises to employees in the Park City office, while giving raises to employees in the warehouse and customer service office. Pay, especially for entry level positions has increased a little over the last 5 years, but other employees did not receive anything. - High turnover & many RIFs since 2020: There is a ton of midlevel turnover, and in the past few years a ton of long tenured employees (10+ years) have gotten fed up with the way things were going and pursued better opportunities, taking a ton of knowledge and experience with them. This could have been avoided by treating people better and giving out increases, but all proposals for raises were denied by upper management. There also have been 5+ RIFs since March 2020, cutting valuable employees and positions which helped the company. One RIF in 2024 cut a couple dozen employees with an average tenure of 10-15yrs just to get rid of higher paid workers.
