On September 11, doADAPT, the Employee Resource Network (ERN) for individuals with visible and invisible disabilities and their allies, had a coffee social at Bitty & Beau’s in the Strip District. Founded by Amy and Ben Wright, proud parents of children Autism and Down Syndrome, Bitty & Beau’s provides work opportunities to individuals with disabilities. Motivated by the realization that over 80% of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities face unemployment, they set out to establish a place that values and provides meaningful work opportunities for people with disabilities. The first shop opened its doors in January 2016 in Wilmington, NC, employing 19 individuals with disabilities. Since then, fueled by the power of social media, extensive media coverage and unwavering community support, Bitty & Beau's Coffee has expanded to 18 locations across 11 states, employing over 450 dedicated individuals including in Pittsburgh.
