Pros

As advertised in Volacci's job postings - free lunch - aka lunch meat, bread, microwavable burritos, diet coke and V8. Taking time off was very flexible - you could just put it on the calendar, or call or email in that morning. You would work on a variety of clients simultaneously - from local air conditioning service repairmen to state medical suppliers.

Cons

Volacci prides itself on its process-driven work ethic and its engaging culture. The processes tend to be basic and lacking of thorough detail. When elaboration is needed, you are on your own. The culture is a mix of Sunday school class and an anger management help group. While fun is encouraged on paper, it tends to be stifled and described more accurately as "well-mannered frivolity". In the end, the culture is more of piece of paper you are required to read every day (which your monthly pay is partially based on reading this 3-, possibly 4-page document daily), then an actual culture itself. You will be required to read and learn about your own job niche on your own outside of work (which will also-again-affect your monthly pay), and in a "book club" setting. This company's culture is very conservative. The company itself seemed to always operate at a break even point, and employees are reminded bi-monthly that there may be consequences to losing more clients. Client and employee turnover is very high, with clients only lasting 3-4 months on average and employees always uncertain of their stability. Senior leadership was absent throughout most of 2010 and was unable to solve complex issues when presented with basic business challenges. Employees were expected to increase their workload capacity on nearly a daily basis to weekly basis without any structured guidelines. Promotions were given in titles, but not in pay. Pay across the board for all non-senior level employees is admittedly very low, sometimes in the lowest 2%-5% of the United States for required job duties and, when a raise is given, it is also insignificant. If you are looking to build a career and climb a company ladder, Volacci is not the place for you. If you just want to make enough money to scrape by and go home with a paycheck once a month, then suit yourself.

Pros

It probably depends on the position. Learning their processes and the basics of SEO can be very helpful. Drupal is a great platform to learn as well, but is not as much of a focus as it seems. Seeing the ins and outs of offshoring labor to India is enlightening. They definitely do it right. A lesson in what not to do can be valuable as well.

Cons

They go a long way to put up the impression of a healthy culture. A bad culture would be better than a fake one. The management style is one of intimidation and harsh criticism. I believe the thought process is if they tell you how bad you're doing, you'll work harder. This extends to insults in front of clients and partners. The pay is low and benefits are poor. Yes even for a small business. I've worked with small business my entire career so I have a few others to compare it to. There is no improvement to the SEO processes. This makes it very hard to improve clients campaigns past the 90 day mark. Some of their techniques are antiquated and have little to no value at this point. Overall, there is no respect, no trust and no support given.

Pros

To start off with a few rare things good at Volacci, you get free lunch, but it's mainly processd deli meats and you will get tired of that REAL fast. It's unhealthy. The environment would be considered more laid back compared to the big corporate world, but again, that's not saying much. You get to work on online marketing projects you wouldn't normaly learn in school, but since the company is process-oriented, it eventually gets dull. Oh, there is a bonus structure in place, but it's a joke. Upper management will find every way to prevent you from getting your bonuses. Don't fall for it. To be honest, it's hard to think of the pros...

Cons

Trying to keep this short, here's a list of the worst things to expect as an employee: 1) Overworked and underpaid. Sure, the pay is "competitive", but you'll easily put in 50-60+ hours a week after the intial honeymoon training phase. There won't be many people to support you because the company wants to keep profit margins up. 2) No recognition. You can do your best and you'll just be another employee. Here's a pat on the back and some more work because we know you can handle the extra workload. Now get back to work. 3) Depressing morale. Ever watched the movie Office Space? Nobody wanted to work at Initech and dreaded talking to their boss. It's no different at Volacci. 4) Lack of creativity. I mentioned it before and I'll try to go into a bit of detail on this one. The company is process-based, so you have to do everything step-by-step like a chimpanzee. If you mess up and senior management finds out about it, that cuts into your bonus. What's the incentive for creativity and going above and beyond? Right, there is none. 5) Terrible upper management. They care about results, which is a good thing for the company, right? Unfortunately at Volacci, if you have a problem, you're on your own buddy. Senior management could care less, they just want to see numbers so they can fatten up their wallets and go to silly conferences. I know all of this sounds rash and maybe even exaggerated. But it's really the truth. If you want a temporary job, this may be it. If you want a career, I'd advise you to look elsewhere.
