Pros

Well-equipped gym, great coworkers, high-energy office. Everyone starts working here with very high hopes.

Cons

-Horrible management issues. My team members are often spoken to like children, and benefits like a flexible schedule are given and taken away by managers as tools to punish employees. So if you need to drop your kids off at school in the morning, prepare to be punished for it as VARIDESK sees fit. -Your job is unlikely to be anything like what the team describes to you when you interview, and if you have any objections, prepare to be shown the door and told you're not a cultural fit, even if they recruited you. -HR does not advocate for employees or appropriately address employee concerns, and it's widely known that employees can't trust HR leadership. Valued team members have been quietly pushed out over petty arguments, and in general leadership has no consideration for the livelihood and time of the candidates they recruit. -Unskilled, ineffective management is a well-known issue at VARIDESK (see the other reviews), yet leaders are constantly congratulating themselves for their contributions. Varidesk's leaders are so busy calling themselves rockstars, they're often taken by surprise when their teams aren't performing, and when they discover any issues, the focus is always on who can be blamed. In sales, when leaders feel pressure, they start breathing down your neck, patrolling the floor to let the teams know they're watching. There's very little trust, and no professional autonomy.

COVID-19 ALERT

Business outlook

Pros

-Stickers on the floor to show you which side of the hall to walk on -cleaning has improved -gym is closed -screening employees with a temperature check -requiring masks when away from desk -distributing masks to employees -hand sanitizer on each desk

Cons

-Absolutely no work from home exceptions without a Doctor's note, and even then it's frowned upon by the C-Suite and HR -Employees getting tested are told not to share that they are being tested or test results with peers creating a culture of fear and mistrust -CEO more concerned with hosting tours in his "living showroom" than the safety of his employees. Wants to show potential clients that they are 100% back in office and adapted to the new normal, all the while employees that have been working in the building are testing positive for COVID-19 - When an employee tests positive, their team is sent home and tested as well, however, we work in an almost completely open work environment with almost 300 people where there are communal coffee bars, trash cans and printers with one entrance and 2 restrooms. The chances of coming in contact with others expands far beyond just the team. - Employees are seen as guinea pigs to test out different office solutions/new products - this is fine in a regular climate, but not okay during a pandemic -Management has been seen away from desks mingling without masks -CEO has adamantly stated that he will not even explore the idea of working from home until sales improve, yet refuses to acknowledge that the reason sales are down is because we are in the middle of a pandemic and other organizations are working from home (i.e. not buying furniture for their offices) -Hourly workers are no longer allowed overtime and sales is making far less than projected in commission, yet salaried positions are not taking a hit in pay at all, creating an unfair burden on workers that depend on overtime and commission as part of their income.

Thank you for the feedback. As our employees know we have an open door policy (actually none of our leaders even have a door) so you can always go to anyone on the Leadership Team to voice your concerns. As you’ve acknowledged in your comments, we have taken abundant precautions to make our office is safe, distanced, and sanitized. In fact, we implemented more stringent guidelines than the CDC from the start. While we understand your desire to hear more about any positive or suspected positive cases in the office, we must ensure the individuals privacy of personal health data. We truly do care about your safety, and the safety of the Vari team. We are doing all that we can to create a work safe environment and to be transparent and authentic about our policies and why they are in place.

Technology Dept needs a complete management overhaul

Pros

Product is great and hitting a major in demand niche. Good perks (discounted food and drinks, jeans and tshirt every day, office gym, great new building) The company as a whole seems to be doing well. The product was really the first affordable product in the market and has majority market share. The CEO is young and energetic and is trying to build a culture of active, energetic, fun, talented people. They don't have a problem spending money either. From the brand new office, to the office gym and coffee bar - when you first walk in you think this place would be awesome to work for. Be advised… that is NOT the case.

Cons

I worked in the "Technology" department as they like to call it. So I can only speak in regards to that. The majority of the departments seem to be fairly happy with low turnover and fairly high morale. Every department has its issues but most seem stable. This is NOT the case for the tech dept. Developers, IT techs, Netsuite admins LOOK ELSEWHERE. The dept was started by a horrendous CIO that got fired and they brought in a "hot shot" from Seattle who came from Nike. I'll let you be the judge of why a hotshot from Nike living in Seattle would move to Coppell TX for a 80 person startup. It seems he is barely qualified to be a project manager let alone a CIO. He is clearly extremely insecure and in WAY over his head. To compensate for all of this he hired 2 of his close personal friends and previous colleagues. I assume he offered them very high salaries because they moved their family from out of state to come work at Varidesk. As planned these two quickly rose to middle management. I thought the CIO was bad and then I met these two. Openly insulting employees out loud, discussing their side businesses that they run at work, extremely aggressive attitudes, close minded to any new ideas, belittling their subordinates openly and out loud for the entire dept including the CIO to hear. These are your future leaders if you take a job here. It would be one thing if all of this was going on and projects were being completed on time and their projects were successful and making the company more successful. But it has been the complete opposite. Every single project has been late and when it finally launched was an entire disaster. If someone wasn't fired for it and thrown under the bus it was all to be very carefully discussed and swept under the rug. The only reports back to the CEO were that everything is great and going as planned. Turn over is extremely high in this dept and when people quit or are fired this management trio openly talks down about the most recent fire or talks about another biting the dust like it is absolutely no big deal. Complete and utter failure at the management level in the tech dept will eventually be the downfall of the website and website sales if management doesn't do some something drastic. I personally did not get fired or quit without notice. I gave my notice and left peacefully. I loved the company and saw such a great future there but could not handle the constant negativity, insulting behavior, extremely low morale, wildly inappropriate management and complete lack of leadership in the technology department.

As with others on this site, we find your review helpful. Based on the length and detail of this review along with the 1-star rating, it appears you feel betrayed by what your thought would be an awesome company to work for long term. It’s unfortunate that leadership wasn’t aware of the magnitude of dissatisfaction by members of the Technology team that have recently departed, and we take responsibility if you did not feel you could share your concerns before resorting to resigning from a company that you loved. Our CEO is very involved and cares about the work environment to the point that he interviews every hire to ensure a “right fit”. It is disappointing that something isn’t working as intended and we are committed to working with and guiding our employees (including management) through the growth and changes that come with being a fast growing company. We are honored to be named #1 on the 2016 SMU Cox Dallas 100 list, but that achievement is largely due to the diverse and wonderful VARIDESK employees. Our employees have committed to making us the best in the market and we are committed to making our employees the best they can be. We appreciate the advice given in your review and will work to ensure we provide the proper development opportunities to all of our employees so they can positively contribute the culture our CEO is so invested in building.
