Great culture but overwhelming software demands

Pros

To be honest, I have been working across different companies in Kenya and this was by far the best organisation I worked with. As is the case, work can be difficult, pressure is always there but synnefa has found a way to create a flexi workplace, awards and cash gifts with bonusly and work from home initiatives. There is no boss or that corporate hierachy and you get to speak to anyone easily and freely. Having come from other companies, this was a real culture shock. overally I enjoyed working here and would love to come back again if given an opportunity.

Cons

There are many of software systems for you to be on top of and can sometimes feel overwhelming when new or if you are a slow tech learner. No easy support, you are expected to get to speed fast and have autonomy which can feel scary at first Deadlines are tight and must be met so ensure you give commitments you can meet.

Thank you for taking the time to share this — it takes courage to give honest feedback, and I read every review personally. The pros you mentioned — skill-building and a fast learning environment — reflect what we genuinely try to build at Synnefa. But I won’t dismiss the cons. A high-performance culture is only valuable if people feel respected and supported through the pressure. If your experience fell short of that, that’s on us to reflect on seriously. We are a small, fast-moving team working on genuinely hard problems. That creates intensity. But intensity is not an excuse for communication that feels demeaning or unsupported. We are actively investing in how we give feedback and how we lead — not because of any single review, but because the quality of our team culture is as important to us as the quality of our products. To anyone reading this: we are not a perfect company, but we are a serious one that takes feedback seriously. If you’d like to speak directly, my door is open. — Taita, Founder and CEO, Synnefa

Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s great to hear you value the culture, environment, and balance at Synnefa. We understand commuting can be a challenge. As a startup building both hardware and software, we believe being together in the office helps us learn faster, share ideas, and innovate as a team. To ease the commute, we offer flexible hours so people can travel outside rush hour, and one work-from-home day each week to give extra flexibility. This way, we keep collaboration strong while also making the workday more manageable. But we hear you, maybe there is more we can do here and we will continually evaluate this as we grow our team.
