Pros

Line employees are friendly and personable. Nice office location.

Cons

The position is sold as "analyst," though the work is essentially data entry. Pay is equal to a data entry position, though a bachelor's degree is not necessary to perform the tasks. Training is piecemeal, on an unnecessarily slow schedule that will leave you with too much downtime early, and changes with each new hire since there is no training program. Accountability is questionable at best. Older employees can make mistakes without repercussion while newer employees can be terminated for making the same mistakes soon after completing training. Communication is poor, with managers assigning work at the last minute and often failing to answer questions without multiple follow ups. The CEO dictates office policy based on her personal feelings or the latest popular (but often irrelevant) article she read in the news. Resource allocation is very poor. A new system for reviewing bills and regulations was promised the year before I started, though it was no where near ready and was built on flawed data. Then it was promised during the year I left, though it's less than half done. It probably won't be done next year either. If you have ideas to increase efficiency in your tasks you can bring them up, though they'll die before they reach the CEO because she maps out her plans on a whim. The system still runs on XP and needs to be rigged to actually run. Despite billing itself as a cutting edge firm it relies on outdated technology and only recently hired an actual IT department. All in all, treat it like a paycheck and move on as fast as you can. Mandatory overtime that isn't compensated, though I can't see how this is legal considering no one has any actual discretionary authority, makes the first 6 months a soul sucking grind. If you work too long after busy season you might get a great performance review followed a few months later by termination based on unstated performance concerns that were never voiced previously.

At StateScape, our practice has always been to hold all of our staff to the same high standards of accountability. Our long standing attention to detail has been the key to our success in the tracking industry, and the reason that we’ve become the 'go to" source for legislative, regulatory and local ordinance monitoring for over 25 years. Like any company, we must meet the demands of our clients and instill confidence in our ability to provide the most accurate and timely analysis on the market. Though we would love to keep everyone that joins our team, not all employees will be able to meet these standards long term. We do however try our best to find new or alternative roles when possible for those that may not be as strong in one area of focus as another.

You can do better

Pros

Not a lot to say here. Most of the analysts are nice and the office is in a good location. Some people are permitted to work remotely which is nice for them but it also means that you're expected to work significantly longer hours because you do not have to spend time commuting.

Cons

Lots to say here, sadly. An open and often vocal disdain for a reasonable work/life balance on the part of the owner/president, unreasonable workloads and schedules (some analysts have to work 6 days a week year round and in the "busy season" 12 hour days are demanded), and arbitrary decision making that creates a culture of fear, uncertainly, and apprehension within the company. Morale was incredibly low when I left and had been getting progressively worse for some time. Basically no on was happy, so I can't imagine who wrote these recent 5 star reviews. An obvious case of review padding which tells you more about this company and how it is managed. Compensation is not competitive for the area and and there is a very low ceiling in terms of opportunities for advancement. With the current job climate in the DC area, you can certainly do better than this place and you should definitely keep looking unless you enjoy working 6 days weeks and being worked like a rented mule. The nature of this small company is that you're at the mercy of the president who exerts total control over every decision that is made. Your only options are to suffer through it or jump ship at the first opportunity.

We appreciate the time that you spent with our company. Though StateScape is no longer a good fit for you personally, we are fortunate to have many long term employees that are capable and motivated to take on increasing levels of responsibility to advance their careers. We are upfront with all of our staff about the time commitment that is required in our industry, which includes longer hours during the winter months when most states are in legislative session. We make sure to compensate those hours with overtime pay, and offer the option to work remotely multiple days a week.

Pros

Cool old town location, though a 15 minute metro ride or street parking. Good exposure to current legislative issues. Management who honestly wants to be good.

Cons

StateScape is a small business with a leader that has big dreams, but lacks the wherewithal to make it happen. Archaic technology that can't compete also makes it tough for employees to be successful. Policies change all the time, though the middle management folks try to mitigate that a bit. Can't understand why this company is still around and hasn't been sold yet.

StateScape has been a leader in legislative, regulatory, and local ordinance monitoring for over 25 years. We were the first company of our kind to offer comprehensive state legislative and regulatory information on the internet, and have pioneered many innovations that others in our field have since adopted as standard industry practice. This would not be possible without the continual upgrade of our core technology to ensure that our staff has the resources necessary to operate with speed and efficiency. We look forward to providing our services for many years to come.
