Don’t be fooled by the mission, hollow reviews or "normal startup problem" excuses. Shift’s leadership team is dishonest, secretive, narcissistic, vindictive and unethical. Before getting near Shift for any reason, you’d be well served to ask any one of the dozens of former employees (far more than currently work there).
The type of small victories that are produced at Shift could be achieved with a far smaller team that actually cares about the mission, takes input from experts, and knows how to focus on solving problems. The real output of this company is wasted effort and investment dollars, and psychological damage for anyone who worked here. Veterans and servicemembers deserve so much better than this.
It’s impossible to capture all the inexcusable things that have happened here, consistent across the history of the company and evident at every level. Some have been referenced in other reviews, but many more have been silenced by predatory and threatening behavior. Some of what you can expect while working here:
- The self-styled visionary CEO will lie to the team, the investors, and anyone who will listen.
- Employees will be asked to violate their own principles and the law in service of the CEO's ideas, directly contradicting core DEI values.
- The true nature of foundational and hugely consequential aspects of the company’s structure and ownership will be hidden and protected by omission and gaslighting.
- Leadership is not hired or promoted based on any standard of experience or performance, but on cronyism, nepotism and fealty.
- Compensation is well below market.
- Disagreement or discussion will be squashed and punished.
- Silence and complicity will be rewarded.
- Sexual, psychological or verbal harassment, retaliation, and bullying are pervasive, unchecked and start with the CEO.
- There will be no accountability for these violations of your workplace safety.
- Almost universally, managers are inexperienced and unqualified to lead, evaluate performance, provide adequate direction or tools, or protect their teams from any of the other cons on this list.
- The veterans working here will be treated worse than anyone else. They will be taken advantage of and manipulated to work dead-end roles specific to this company, without any true professional development, training, or exposure to industry equivalent roles, career paths or pay.
