Toxic management creates an uneasy work environment
Pros
Small staff, large property, good corporate leadership, relaxed atmosphere, mostly off on weekends, which isn’t common in the property management industry.
Cons
On the low end of average as far as hourly pay, absolutely no commission (regardless of the fact that this property was over 400 units and leased conventional, Section 8, and LIHTC (income based) units, property manager was also very negative and consistently talked badly about not only residents, prospective residents, other employees, and even vendors who were just at the property to perform maintenance, upkeep or repairs. Her attitude was directly related to the amount of time she had been at that particular property, which was over 20 years, and she definitely needed a change in scenery in order to continue to do her job at the level. she was definitely capable of. It wasn’t that she wasn’t knowledgeable and aware of absolutely everything about that property, but just that she clearly was burnt out and desperately needed a different position at a different property in order to evolve and grow as a manager. This made the environment and the atmosphere, the vibe if you will, very uneasy, and you were constantly getting the feeling you were walking on eggshells, very unsure of what she may or may not do or say that particular day, depending upon her mood and how annoyed or angry she might be. it became very unprofessional and not to mention uncomfortable for me to hear her constantly badmouth the assistant manager in front of me, considering I was the leasing agent who have been there less than six months, and I was being put in the middle of two people who clearly did not get along and had never gotten along since they had been working together prior to me ever showing up. This eventually became an unbearable environment to work in, so I felt the need to move on, and I don’t know that I left under the best circumstances or in a way I typically would have as far as putting in a notice, etc.
