I have been working at LCBO part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good wage with great management and flexibility in responsibilities at work. Fair with breaks and paid training for a variety of tasks.

    Cons

No guaranteed hours and a very rigid system of promotions. Can cause for feeling unrewarded at times.

    Advice to Management

An ability to be given hours if you are a valued employee should be instituted. Some people higher up are required to be scheduled no matter their actual dedication or quality of work and it is discouraging for lower seniority employees to work their hardest.

I have been working at LCBO full-time

    Pros

Good Pension and Benefits. Not much else.

    Cons

-Unionized staff cannot be dismissed for poor performance or disciplined for not getting anything done. -Store managers are accountable for running an efficient business without any levers in terms of accountability for unionized staff.

    Advice to Management

You are not in touch with what is going on in the front lines or you really don't care. Ask yourself if you would be able to succeed as a Store Manager in the current environment of no accountability for unionized staff, and increased efficiency expectations. This is not the private sector. Front line staff (read: Workers) need to be held accountable to minimum performance. -How many people have you dismissed due...

I worked at LCBO full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    1. About the best work life balance you can find on the market as an Accountant. 2. Competent team makes teamwork easy and Mondays not so Monday. 3. Compensation and benefits are top notch. Very few other companies and surpass the total compensation package for any positions below senior management. Benefits are not as applicable to younger people. However if you have (or plan to have) family, the benefits...

    Cons

    1. It's a government organization pursuing status-quo. Changes happen slowly / gradually. Any value you can deliver is limited. 2. While career development is promoted by some of management, not all divisions are on board. 3. The industry itself is very limited in career path. Retail isn't exactly a future sector you want to be in 20 years down the road. 4. Partially unionized environment combined with...

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing. LCBO is definitely many steps ahead of its competitor (The Beer Store). While this company is not for everyone, it's probably the best stable job you can find in today's corporate environment. Having met with the CEO, CFO, and other senior management, they are an approachable group - some even remembers your name.
