      Political Landmine with Confused Direction

Dec. 22, 2014 - Broker in Edmonton, AB
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

If you have previous relationships with upper management, then be confident you will be paid very handsomely. For others that do not, you will have to fight just to stay moderately competitive in the market. Or, if you are so bold to threaten your departure or play teacher's pet, perhaps that will provide you an increase (at your own risk).

      Cons

Very poor work-life balance for some who want to excel at their job - be highly careful of exhausting politics. Great deal of change occurring in the workplace that neither is transparent in their motives, not organized, and leaves everyone who has no pre-existing relationship with upper management in total free fall. Nepotism, politics, terrible combination of strong personalities to work with.

Former Employee, more than 5 years

      Pros

Any of the employees who were hired 5 years ago who are still there (and I believe that number is around 10) are good, hard working people who know what they are doing. So I guess a benefit would be working with THOSE people. Also, there IS room for growth: IF you are male and don't really know all that much, you will soar to the top of this organization.

      Cons

      - Local office is run by a tight knit group of neanderthals who have no respect for women and very little regard for women in general - People put in charge of things are there due to their ability to suck up and schmooze or nepotism - Pay is super skewed – if you work hard and one of the people on the ground, getting things done, you do not make very much money. Whereas, if you are a male account executive who really doesn’t do anything, your salary will be HUGE - Management is completely ineffectual and clueless as to how things should be done or who is actually doing the work - The people who actually DO work are completely overworked and completely stressed out - Drinking / being an alcoholic is actually a pre-requisite for getting ahead - Conflicting messages from management: they say “client first” then tell you to place coverage with the company that gives the highest commission (does ANYONE remember the Elliot Spitzer / AIG / Marsh thing that happened 15 years ago? No one here apparently does). Also management talks about being “transparent” when they actually mean “opaque” – perhaps installing a dictionary app would assist? - No room for growth / advancement unless you are in the inner circle and male - This company EXCELS at mass firings of people who actually DO work and at hiring people who do not do anything -Local office hasn't made budget for years - Canadian operation is completely subsidized by London

      Administrative role

Feb. 2, 2016 - Anonymous Employee in Calgary, AB
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Opportunities are there and there are many people to learn from. You work very independently so learning about insurance doesn't take long at all.

      Cons

Old boys club and it's really hard to move up. If you are good at your current role, they do their best to keep you there and that is frustrating.

      Pros

Good people trying to do their job. Good benefits. Fair compensation.

      Cons

Terrible management. No direction. Unrealistic goals. No senior managers who know what they are doing or where the company in Canada is going.

      Pros

      Cons

Politics is a blood sport at JLT Canada. Old management was pretty bad but new management makes the old one look effective! it's a gong show. Everyone is stabbing everyone else in the back. In every organization there are politics but this is completely out of control. Check out the public financials for Canada.....
