Pros

Good pay and work life balance

Cons

Specialist grades (senior positions) is dominated by whites. They have limited understanding of local contexts, yet given authority over programming in countries. Internationals prey on coordinators (nationals) knowldge and effort-the latter is at the bottom of the hirarchy and used as means to end (i.e.internationals career progression). So much nepotism that it is shameful. Best assigbments are given based in who you know rather than your competence. The network of whites ensure they keep each other hired by framing every achievment at local level as their own initiatives and alleged genious managment...

Pros

The ILO offers a lot of exposure to experts and policymakers in diverse areas. Junior employees in the field offices get the opportunity to take on a lot of responsibility and manage a great deal - I'm not sure if this is the same at the headquarters level. Colleagues are genuinely interested in the subject matter, as is management. People in field offices are approachable.

Cons

The organization can be really bureaucratic, which means things don't get done as fast as you would like - a lot of delays come from HQ. There is a disconnect between field offices and HQ. ILO is slow to modernize and constantly changing computer programs, systems, goals and reporting needs. Very difficult to get real staff positions, even after years of consulting full time and performing all of the functions of staff.
