Stimulating impactful work and great colleagues, but low pay and limited progression opportunities
Pros
The work - intellectually stimulating, varied, and impactful (albeit depending on role). This is the main reason people do the job. People - kind, smart, collaborative, sometimes genuinely brilliant colleagues Mission London office (and canteen) Huge variety of potential subject areas "I work at the Treasury" sounds great at a dinner party Pension Exposure Collaborative and supportive culture
Cons
Pay - especially at senior levels (in relative terms) Lack of progression opportunities beyond Grade 7 - including lack of transparency and structure - made worse by shrinking of civil service (especially London office versus Darlington, which feels as if it receives favouritism) Poor performance culture. Minimal incentives or rewards for good work. And the (admittedly the rare number of) underperforming staff are not removed Darlington office
