Pros
- Colleagues are authentic and caring (great friendships) - You can support national weather events (hurricanes, severe weather, etc.) - Decent benefits
Cons
I started before the company launched, and it has gone downhill ever since. The leadership has continued to lack direction and take a “throw everything against the wall and see what sticks” approach to the industry. Below are the pros and cons of working for Fox Weather. Cons: - Annual layoffs - they have had layoffs at the start of every fiscal year since the beginning - Lack of growth - I was there 3.5 years, and not one 1:1 I had was to discuss my growth or opportunities at Fox Weather, and they rarely promote people who came in externally (see below) – cog in a wheel - Do not value high performers - We had a few colleagues who did the bare minimum, which forced more work on the rest of us. This was never addressed despite the constant conversations. It was always a “we will address it” but nothing ever happened. If you are a high performer, expect more work without any recognition or additional compensation - Poor leadership – The leadership team came over from Fox News, so many of them lack weather knowledge. Leaders would often tell the non-Fox News employees that they do not know how this industry works despite their experience and expertise in the industry. This caused a huge disconnect between those who came from Fox News and those who did not. The culture continued to decline as part of this. From my friends who still work there it sounds like it continues to decline. - Poor culture – Comment above and a general since of fear since there have been layoffs every year. There was no rhyme or reason to who part of the layoffs other than they have turned over almost 100% since the inception. - Compensation – The base compensation is alright, but there are no raises or bonuses. The only people eligible for bonuses are the leaders (Director and above) who came over from Fox News. (more reason why there is a disconnect between leaders and everyone else) - Lack of innovation – I recognize that this is a niche industry that can sometimes be hard to be a revenue generator, but it seems like they are prioritizing older approaches. Rather than prioritizing digital technology and their app they put much larger emphasis on less sustainable revenue generators - On an island – I thought it would be cool to be part of the larger national Fox name (Fox Sports) and the resources. Unfortunately, I did not realize Fox makes new subsidiaries operate as an island who do not provide the resources until they can prove to be a sustainable investment. We never really partnered with Fox Sports or Fox News or any other large entity. We were siloed in all aspects. The team I worked with had some amazing people, but it was truly the definition of trauma-bonding. There were several teams that did not do anything and were able to skate by and provided no value to the organization. I eventually left Fox Weather because I wanted to grow and learn and be able to contribute, but that was not an option here. I have spoken with a few friends who still work there, and it sounds like it has only continued to decline. I would opt to look more at Accuweather, The Weather Channel, or Spectrum News if you are looking at growing your career.
