Pros
I've been a freelancer for three years after leaving my last studio job. The flexibility it offers is great for travel/spending time with friends and family and I enjoy working from home for the most part.
Cons
It's a constant grind to find new work and high-paying jobs are scarce, especially in the Austin area. Most employers seem to want an exact experience match, which makes it hard to expand your portfolio and gain new experience. Going freelance was also a significant pay dip for me, although at the moment my level of work is closer to part-time than full-time, so hopefully with a fuller slate of work that wouldn't be the case.
